I joined parker simone LLP on April 1, 1996, (not joking) as office administrator. At that time the entire firm was comprised of Marco, Gordon and one CA. I brought 19 years of experience working for Montreal-based accounting firms, including Doane Raymond Chartered Accountants and Richter, Usher & Vineberg, Chartered Accountants. As parker simone grew, so did my responsibilities. After a few years I was pleased and proud to accept the position of office manager. When we moved premises, I took on the challenge-and the logistics-of moving the office, contracting external services, and ensuring a smooth transition from one location to another. I was glad to see the last of the IT people when the move was finally accomplished, I'll tell you. In addition to the usual duties of office management, I'm responsible for the hiring and training of administrative staff, staying on top of new developments in the administrative sector, as well as creating plans for upgrading systems. The firm's endeavor to go paperless—along with the upgrades and challenges this initiative involves—is definitely top on my list of personal growth experiences. Over the past 15 years I've watched parker simone grow and change, but one thing has never changed—the personal touch and warmth of the people who work here. I began my accounting career with PriceWaterhouseCoopers as part of my co-op program in 1974. Three years later I passed my CA exams, and I decided to specialize in taxation. I left Edmonton and joined KPMG's Mississauga office in 1983, which is where I met Marco. But I had a big independence streak, so in 1988 I left to set up my own practice in the Mississauga area. As sole proprietor my practice was pretty unusual, as the majority of my work was taxation based. But by 1993 the financial reporting side of the business had grown to the point where I needed a partner. I asked Marco to join me because we shared a common idea of the firm we wanted to build. Fortunately he agreed, and parker simone LLP was founded. I continue to handle the taxation side of the business, while Marco manages our accounting and audit services. My work includes the usual compliance issues, both personal and corporate, and the not-so-usual international planning and compliance. I manage succession planning and implementation, acquisitions, mergers, dispositions, estate planning and management, foundation compliance and management, and not-for-profit sporting organizations and cultural organizations. I'd have to say that when it comes to taxation, there's not much I haven't handled. In fact I've dealt with international taxation issues on six continents. So, yes—I'm a bit obsessive. My career began in 1980 when I joined the Toronto office of KPMG, which is where I met Gordon. In 1989 I left my position there as audit senior manager, and I took on various senior finance positions with Canadian real estate developers. As I fondly tell people, I learned how not to do real estate when I worked for a large home builder that went broke. I then learned how to do real estate when I joined Trizec Properties. My claim to "real estate fame" is when from 1991 to 1993 I was part of the Trizec team that built the most expensive parking garage in the world—the Bay-Adelaide Centre. I was very fortunate when, in 1993, Gordon asked me to join him. It turned out we both had the same dream: to create a boutique firm that would give clients a genuine alternative to the large accounting firms; a partnership that would offer the quality of expertise found in the large firms—but also the personal and committed service that is pretty rare in those places. So in May 1993 we formed parker simone LLP. Since its inception parker simone has developed its market niche, providing professional services to businesses around the globe including Canada, United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Africa, South America and Asia. As for me? I'd say my strengths are providing our clients with audit, accounting and taxation services as well as overseeing the management of our business operations. One of my unique abilities is working with our clients to assist in resolving their business issues. This strength has helped me in building our base of entrepreneurs and public company clients, which are international in scope. Another of my unique abilities is the mentoring of our professional and administrative staff. I derive a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction watching our people grow in their professional lives. Currently I serve as an engagement partner for a number of private enterprises and public companies, and in the past I've had plenty of audit experience with regulated financial services clients, including investment counselors and a mutual fund dealer. I've provided professional services to virtually all sectors, from public companies and privately owned businesses to not-for-profit organizations and individuals.
