Busy Season is over (for now.)
April has finished. Some people are saying farewell to April showers; others are finishing the last of the Easter eggs. For accountants, you can hear a collective sigh of relief as Tax Season is finally over. It was our “Busy Season” and many many accountants felt the physical and emotional pain of long hours. Although I am speaking from personal experience, these are common feelings which I’m sure other fast-paced-extended-hours professionals can relate to at some point or another during their year.
The workload piled up, and we all tried to reduce stress, relax and breeze through the busy season feeling rested, grounded and in control. We do it every year and there are lots of ways that we have all tried to keep that work-life balance in some sort of working order!
Here are eight favourites I found in an article that might be useful for anyone who is seasonally busy.
- Hoping that a 3 day weekend will soon be due!
- Not giving up on some of my personal favorite things – like my must see “Game of Thrones“
- Coffee… a lot of coffee!
- Work as if the deadline were tomorrow
- Exercise before coming to work
- Scheduling time off
- Encouraging clients to get work in early, even if partial, so the last two weeks are less terrible.
- Taking long deep breaths.
But perhaps the very best idea was:
“Exercise every morning and go out for pizza and drinks every Thursday night.”
On a more serious note, for our clients, even though our Busy Season is over, it is not too early for us all to start Tax Planning for 2016. If you have not already scheduled a meeting with your accountant you should. If you are going to get full benefit of the various options that are available, you need to sit down with your accountant and develop a tax strategy.
Actually this should be a strategy that encompasses more than just the next year. The further we can look ahead the better.
Optimising your tax strategy will have real benefits for you. Sadly though, it probably will not make our next busy season any less busy!!
